As environmental awareness increases, biodegradable packaging materials have become an industry trend. PLA (polylactic acid) laminated paper and nano-free plastic coatings are two mainstream technologies, but there are significant differences between the two in terms of performance and environmental protection.

Limitations of PLA Laminated Paper

PLA laminated paper coated with bio-based PLA is biodegradable, but relies on industrial composting environments (which require high temperatures above 50°C and specific microorganisms), and has a very low decomposition efficiency in the natural environment. In addition, PLA has poor temperature resistance and tends to soften at high temperatures (over 60°C) and become brittle at low temperatures (e.g., frozen environments), limiting its application scenarios.

Advantages of nanoplastic-free coatings

In contrast, nano-degradable plastic-free coatings use a natural polymer composite technology that allows for rapid degradation in the natural environment without the need for industrial composting, and the decomposition products are harmless. It has a wider temperature resistance range of -20°C to 120°C, making it suitable for scenarios such as hot beverage cups and frozen food packaging. In addition, the nano-coating has better barrier properties, is effective against oil and water, and has higher mechanical strength than PLA laminates.

Nano-free plastic coatings outperform PLA laminates in terms of environmental friendliness (natural degradation) and practicality (resistance to high and low temperatures), making them a better solution for replacing traditional plastics. In the future, as the cost of the technology decreases, plastic-free coatings may become a core option for sustainable packaging.
